I recently read the fascinating book
Men of Tomorrow, about the birth of the comic-book industry, which set me off on a Superman-reading spree. The
collection I found in the library was interesting in lots of ways (the stories in it, from the late 50s and early 60s, are very odd!). One thing that jumped out at me, though, was the few stories drawn by Kurt Schaffenberger. The art overall was pretty average, but this guy's drawing were something else. What really struck me was that they resembled a similar style to Jamie Hernandez's later work on
Love and Rockets (see
my earlier blog entry on this). Anyway, a bit of googling reveals that Kurt has quite a following, represented in a recent book dedicated to him called
Hero Gets Girl. So, here's some of his covers... you can't really see the similarity to Jamie's style in these covers, but they're still interesting!
